SARIT 06: new ways of CS education on all levels
SARIT 06 was held March 2, 2006 at the University of Basel, Kollegienhaus, HS001.
42 people attended (including 6 board members and 14 panelists). SARIT '06 has proposed to all participants a day of reflection on the future of Computer Science in academic institutions. In order to facilitate the discussions, the day has been organized in a series of panels and talks with key people from our institutions.
We had the chance to have an excellent conference on the “Opportunities and Challenges for Swiss Academic Computer Science” by Willy Zwaenepoel, dean of the I&C school in EPFL. We also had the opportunity to hear 3 talks by Maryline Maillard on ranking institutions, Friedemann Mattern on Bibliometric Evaluation of Computer Science, and Alan Victor McCluskey on the difficulties of Swiss Computer Science studies.
Three very interesting panels have given the opportunity to discuss very challenging issues:
- “How to make a smooth transition between secondary school and university?” moderated by Walter Gander from ETHZ
- “Computer Science: a Gender Issue? How to increase the number of female students and faculty members?” moderated by Sabine Süsstrunk from EPFL
- “How to attract the right students to Computer Science?” moderated by Xavier Comtesse from Avenir Suisse
This day was considered as successful by most participants and we expect that it will initialise some actions in the right direction. Speakers have provided either handouts of their slides or papers and they are available through the links below.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all speakers, all members of the SARIT board, especially Christian Tschudin for the local organization, and all attendees for their active participation.
Daniel Thalmann, EPFL, President SARIT
